Healthcare Provider Dominates AI-Powered Search Results
Positioning medically accurate content as the go-to source for AI assistants and answer engines, establishing the client as a trusted authority in health information.
Key Results
The Challenge
The client, a regional healthcare network with 12 facilities, recognized early that AI-powered search was disrupting traditional patient acquisition. When people asked ChatGPT or Perplexity health questions, the client's website was nowhere to be found.
Despite having extensive medical content created by their physician team, this content wasn't structured in ways that AI systems could easily parse and cite. Their content was clinically accurate but not optimized for how AI systems select and present information.
With patient acquisition costs rising and competitors beginning to appear in AI responses, leadership prioritized becoming a trusted source that AI assistants would cite when answering health-related queries.
The Solution
We developed a comprehensive Answer Engine Optimization strategy specifically designed for healthcare content. This required balancing medical accuracy with the structural requirements that AI systems need to cite sources.
Every piece of content was restructured with clear, direct answers to common patient questions, followed by the detailed clinical context. We implemented extensive medical schema markup to help AI systems understand the content's authority and accuracy.
We also built out an entity strategy, ensuring the healthcare network and its physicians were recognized entities that AI systems associated with medical expertise in specific conditions and treatments.
Our Approach
AI Citation Audit
Systematically queried major AI platforms with health questions in the client's service areas. Documented which sources were being cited, how answers were structured, and where opportunities existed.
Content Restructuring for AI
Reorganized 400+ health articles to lead with direct, clear answers. Created FAQ sections, definition blocks, and structured explanations that AI systems could easily extract and cite.
Medical Schema Implementation
Implemented comprehensive MedicalCondition, MedicalProcedure, and Physician schema markup. This helped AI systems understand content authority and medical accuracy signals.
Entity Authority Building
Established the healthcare network and key physicians as recognized entities through Wikipedia contributions, medical journal citations, and consistent entity information across authoritative platforms.
Continuous Monitoring & Optimization
Built monitoring systems to track AI citations and featured snippet performance. Iterated content based on what was being cited versus missed opportunities.
"We saw the future of health information search shifting to AI, and The Digital Branding helped us get ahead of it. Now when patients ask AI assistants about conditions we treat, they're referred to our content. This is exactly where we need to be."
